Terri [has not] died for your sins

That's right Dems, Liberal Media, Michael Moore, on this Good Friday remember: Terry Schiavo was sent by God to not die for your sins. Or at least that's what Tom DeLay seems to believe. In an address to some supporters he said: "And I tell you, ladies and gentlemen, one thing that God has brought to us is Terri Schiavo, to elevate the visibility of what’s going on in America..."

What's going on in America, you may ask? "This is exactly the issue that’s going on in America, of attacks against the conservative movement, against me and against many others." Wow. Really? I thought what was going on was that the Republicans were inexplicably turning their back on traditional core values like States' Rights, smaller government, fiscal responsibility and keeping government from meddling in private matters.

"The point is, the other side has figured out how to win and defeat the conservative movement, and that is to go after people personally, charge them with frivolous charges..." I know the Democrats are smart and all, with their elite Ivy-league educations, but I don't think they alone can take the credit for coming up with this tactic, nor do they seem to be doing a particularly good job of it. I've yet to see an impeachment. One would hope maybe they picked up a few tips from watching the GOP during the Clinton years, although they don't seem to pull it off very well -- think of all the possibilities for special counsel that have been missed!

Anyway, I'll try to let Mr. DeLay finish without interrupting:

The point is, the other side has figured out how to win and defeat the conservative movement, and that is to go after people personally, charge them with frivolous charges, link that up with all these do-gooder organizations funded by George Soros, and then get the national media on their side. That whole syndicate that they have going on right now is for one purpose and one purpose only, and that’s to destroy the conservative movement. It’s to destroy conservative leaders, not just in elected office but leading. I mean, Ed Feulner of the Heritage Foundation was under attack in the National Journal. This is a huge, nationwide, concerted effort to destroy everything we believe in. You need to look at this, at what’s going on, and participate in fighting back. One way they stopped churches from getting into politics was Lyndon Johnson, who passed a law that said you couldn’t get into politics or you were going to lose your tax-exempt status because they were all opposed to him when he was running for President. That law we’re trying to repeal; it’s very difficult to do that. But the point is, when they knock out a leader, then no other leader will step forward for a while, because they don’t want to go through the same thing. If they go after and get a pastor, then other pastors shrink from what they should be doing. It forces Christians back into the church, and that’s what’s going on in America: “The world is too bad, I’m going to go get inside this building and I’m not going to play in the world.” That’s not what Christ asked us to do. And so they understand that, it is a political maneuver, and they are going to try to destroy the conservative movement, and we have to fight back.

Very enlightening. I had no idea things had gotten so bad. The last thing we want are Christians in church. These are trying times: Some people have to decide whether or not to take a loved one off life support, others have to decide whether to exploit that decision to cover their own political ass. With a little prayer and reflection on what Jesus asked you to do, you might come up with the right answer: Remember in the Bible how Jesus declared that in this one specific case the Roman govenor should overrule the activist Jewish courts and order Lazarus's feeding tube reinserted? I think this was right around the time the courts struck down God's Law on pork and circumcision, and they were just about to debate gay marriage but had to hear a case on capital punishment instead, which they ultimately referred to a higher court in Galilee which refused to hear it, and it finally had to be referred back the legislative/executive branch for a decision. Or something like that, I'm not much of a Bible scholar. But I digress... Here's the full transcript of Mr. DeLay's comments if you're interested.

These happenings remind me of the whole Elian Gonzalez fiasco - extreme actions taken in service of ideology to bring about the desired goal. In that case it was hoped by the Lefties that if they gift wrapped and handed off the boy, Castro would show himself to not be the bad guy he's painted out to be. Didn't work by the way.

I'm not impressed that the Big Government Republicans are following the same example with their meddling.

Uh, really? Correct me if I'm wrong Granite, but wasn't Elian a case of federal intervention to *uphold* the law? Seems quite different than the current tactic of trying to circumvent it.
