House options: soliciting feedback

Gas clothes dryer or clothes electric dryer? We're getting a gas stove, and have the option for a convection oven: Yes or No? I really have no idea how a convection oven differs from a regular oven.

Convection Ovens cook more evenly (and supposedly faster). If you bake at all, go for the convection. If you can, get a convection microwave too... you'll actually be able to cook food in the microwave that doesn't taste like poo.

We have the GE Profile gas stove that you have been considering. I have never had any problems with my food being over- or under-cooked. Here is a nice link for you that has a little more information on convection ovens and what they can do for you: http://www.taunton.com/finecooking/pages/c00042.asp Note that not all convection ovens actually circulate air - they use a third heating element instead (which is what mine does). The article mentions that these types don't cook evenly, but I have never had any problems, and we've had ours for about six years now.

As for the question of gas vs. electric dryers, we switched from an electric dryer to a gas dryer when we bought our gas range. We saw a dramatic decrease in the amount of time it took to dry a load of laundry (without greater shrinkage or any other negative effects on our clothing), and we saw a reduction in our electric bill. Yes, I have heard of the horror stories of people burning their homes down with their gas dryers, but if you clean them (or pay somebody to have it cleaned) yearly or so, you are eliminating the build up of lint on the bottom of the dryer that causes those fires. This is regular appliance maintenance that you would need to do on an electric dryer too - just like you need to clean out the vent periodically....

So, there you go - once you go gas you'll never go back!! :)

I think you got really good advice on the stove already but just wanted to remind you I work for the gas company if you have further gas questions. You are going propane though right? I don't believe we have lines in Stratham.....

Yes, it's liquid propane, not natural gas.

Only ever had an electric dryer, my mother-in-law had a gas one when she bought a new house, she had it replaced as soon as possible. Don't believe it was the fear of fire, so to speak, but probably the "like what you know" aspect.

What does this have to do with a wine cellar?

Posted by: Bob on June 25, 2003 02:41 PM

Well, buying the cheaper appliances means more money left over for the custom cherry and ebony climate controlled wine cellar!

Oh!!!!!! Well then forget the convection oven and cook on a Weber grill in the back yard.
