I was at a gathering of my former outlaws for a sweet sixteen party when presidential politics came up in conversation. Everyone was talking about who they would, and wouldn't, vote for and whether they were going to watch the upcoming debates.
Somebody mentioned that they'd like to vote for Obama when one of the sister-out-laws said, "I'm not racist, but I'm not ready for a black man to run this country."
I'm pretty sure that they don't understand the definition of racism...ya know?
Posted by bbarton at January 7, 2008 09:31 AMwhat was the reaction from the room? did anyone else agree with her?
Posted by: heidi on January 7, 2008 07:25 PMWell, I voted for McCain and think that not only is he electable, he is also a man of integrity and experience that will be able to get the job done.
As for the racist comment, I wasn't in the room at the time so I don't know how it was received but I wonder if anyone even blinked an eye when she said it. Pretty sad when you think that they don't even realize exactly how racist they are.

He Lives!
Great time to be in NH. Still undecided myself - leaning toward Richardson but electability = nil, so may suck it up and go Edwards (seems kinda slick, but the nearest on positions of the electable 3).
I'm afraid SOL's position might be all too common across the States. As one commentator noted, maybe electing Obama as the Democratic candidate will be considered "victory enough" for race relations, and we could be in for - heaven forbid - another Rep. presidency under McCain - the more "experience" (and whiter) voice.
It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
