Princess Middle Daughter returned from France on Saturday night and the first thing she did upon entering her home was run to the bathroom.
She came out of their and waxed eloquent about how much she loves our bathroom after what she was exposed to in France. Her opinion is that most of them were dirty, arcane, and if they were decent they cost 3 euros to use!
Here's an actual picture of her favorite model encountered during her week's stay over there:

Yes, that's a women's bathroom! The stand on the raised up parts and aim for the hole. She said this bathroom was unusual in that it had toilet paper.

In theory they are considered slightly more hygienic than western loos because there is no seat to trap germs... but the trouble is, it's impossible to pee in that narrow hole without splashing your shoes and ankles.
At least it's your own pee splashing you ... meagre consolation though it is!
Posted by: Antipodeesse on May 2, 2006 10:23 AMThat's kind of similar to the Japanese-style toilets in Japan, but those were more of an elongated rectangle with rounded ends porcelain indent in the floor that you have to squat over. You still end up with the splashing pee problem.
We lived in Japan when my daughter younger and I still remember taking her to the restroom in a supermarket when she as about 5 years old and it was all squat-style toilets. She turned to me and said, "That's ridiculous" and then walked out.
Ah, the good ol' "Eastern" toilet. When I went to Italy, the business office had the more familiar toilets, but then the shop floor restroom came complete with the bullseye floors. I had to try it, just to prove it to myself. I think that's why they don't have the obesity problem like we do here (Don't eat that, or you'll have to go to the shiny shitter.....)
