I was watching the WSOP on TV the other night and they featured several hands involving Phil Hellmuth. He's a poker star and has won many tournaments over the years, around $3.6 million's worth.
Anyway, during one particular hand he raised and only one guy stayed in to play. They raised and called back and forth until the guy went all in against Phil's superior chip stack. Phil had A K, and the guy had K J. The guy paired the jack on the river card and it drove Phil insane.
In the world of poker, if someone raises 2-3 times the big blind pre-flop that means they are probably sitting on a premium hand. A K is premium, K J is not. He was upset because the guy won the hand and wasn't playing good poker.
So far as I'm concerned, as soon as you start playing your hands the way someone at the table expects you to play, you might as well hand over all of your chips.
I agree with Phil in principle, but it was still a funny thing to watch.

Posted by: Bob on October 28, 2005 08:12 AMIs it really exciting to watch on TV?? I just don't get it. I know a lot of people who love it though.
Posted by: kari on October 28, 2005 09:27 AMKari - It is more interesting than exciting. It is fun to see how they play different hands and since you know everyone's cards, you know when they're bluffing too.
Posted by: Bob on October 28, 2005 10:43 AMwas that the one where he went over to his wife and started whining about it to her and the announcer said she must be a saint to put up with Phil? lol, because I saw that one. But then again, Phil's ALWAYS whining, so it could have been any show. I can't stand that guy.

Posted by: Bob on October 28, 2005 10:56 AMI must admit, when you talk about poker, it's all Greek to me!
Posted by: Antipodeesse on October 28, 2005 04:21 PMAntipo - You'd catch on right away after a couple of games. The basic rules aren't hard...but winning can be pretty difficult at times.
Posted by: Bob on October 28, 2005 04:29 PMWell, I do nod my head sagely and keep an extremely INTERESTED expression on my face whenever you talk about it...
Posted by: Antipodeesse on October 29, 2005 04:07 AMAntipo - That's all any guy can ever expect. LOL
Posted by: Bob on October 29, 2005 06:03 PMClint and I watch that all the time. People think we are crazy.

It's amazing to me how poker is such a profitable phenomenon. I can never be so savvy at a card game, but I enjoy the excitement around it.
