One of the most beautiful sights I've seen is the changing colors on the trees during Autumn here in New Hampshire. We have a couple of maple trees in our yard that are absolutely breathtaking.
The down side to all the beauty is that the leaves ultimately fall off of the trees and land in my yard. The amount of time it takes to rake my yard and the back breaking nature of the work make Fall a bitter-sweet time of the year for me.
The smell of woodsmoke from wood-stoves or fireplaces. PLUS!
Another load of leaves on a tarp that has to be dragged into the woods. Minus
The vibrancy and variety of colors as the leaves change color. PLUS!

The crispness of a Fall day, when the sky is achingly blue and the air is clear and dry. PLUS!

Picking apples, carving pumpkins, admiring the night sky and the brightness of the stars. PLUS! PLUS! PLUS!
Dawn - We're looking forward to it too.
Posted by: Bob on September 20, 2005 02:57 PMI'm with you on all the plusses. I absolutely LOVE fall!! Of course here it's still in the 90's! I miss the colorful maples (send me some leaves) but we do drown in pine straw!! Weekends were made for soccer and raking...and raking!
Posted by: Alison on September 21, 2005 11:38 AMPLEASE POST A PIC OF THEM BEAUTIFUL MAPLES! We're having a damn dry year and the colors in Michigan are just going to plain SUCK!
Posted by: Jim on September 22, 2005 01:20 AMAlison - We'll send you some leaves for sure, though I'm concerned about our trees in the front yard. I think the maple tree has tar spot disease, and that means all the leaves turn brown and die without doing the pretty colors first.
Jim - Keep your fingers crossed for our yard. I'll take pictures of trees in the area if they don't work out.
