Oldest Daughter is in her dorm and starts classes today. We heard from her several times this weekend, visited her in her dorm, and she stopped by the house with some of her friends so that she could borrow a car on Sunday.
Her roommate was with her and said that her parents told her that they didn't want her to come home this weekend. What kind of parent says that? The same kind that refused to drive them into town, when she was leaving the room and heading in that direction anyway. She wants them to get used to walking.
The parents told me this story at a field hockey game on Friday. Their other daughter is on the same team as Middle Daughter. I then told them that I saw the girls downtown later that same day and gave them a ride back to their dorm. They must think I'm a big pushover but I think they're nuts so we're even.
My kids are happy to see me and their friends love us. So we go out of our way once in a while and help them when they need it. I'd rather it this way then have one of my kids sitting there with tears in their eyes because they were told not to come home.

Posted by: Bob on August 29, 2005 02:57 PMThat's so sad. I was fortunate, as your daughter's friends are, to have surrogate parents that would step in for my own dysfunctional and almost always absent ones.
You are a good guy with a heart of gold, Bob.
Posted by: u on August 29, 2005 03:16 PMThanks, Lu. My parents were almost always absent too, something I vowed wouldn't happen with my children.
Posted by: Bob on August 29, 2005 03:21 PMshe wasn't one of the "29" arrested last night, was she?
kidding!

Posted by: Bob on August 29, 2005 06:54 PMYou are not a pushover - you and Mrs Bob are just good parents - I drive my daughters all over the place - they drive me up the wall.
Posted by: Karen on August 30, 2005 10:42 AMKaren - LOL At least everyone is being driven somewhere!
Posted by: Bob on August 30, 2005 10:55 AMWell, now... I'm not sure suggesting she stay at school the first weekend is a bad thing. It is supposed to be college after all, and most don't have the benefit of a quick jaunt home and that is kind of the point. It's bad enough she's getting to live with a high school friend rather than tossed into a room with strangers. Is your daughter going to be one of those "that local kid" in the dorm... the one who is never around, always running home to do laundry rather than suffering the laundry room like the rest of us, or goes home for 3 days when she's sick so Mom can take care of her, or is always gone Sunday nights for dinner at home... we had a kid like that in our dorm. Don't be a pushover Bob! Change the locks and turn her bedroom into a tasting room.

That is absolutely heinous. What kind of parent would do that?
