We originally had Comcast provide our phone, cable tv, and internet service.
We disconnected the phone when they refused to give us a local exchange number and it was long distance for our kids to call their friends.
This weekend, we disconnected our cable tv and moved to DirecTV instead. Our installation was free and there was no charge for the dish, two receivers, and the TiVo was only $100 with a $100 rebate. We got some NFL package that includes a bunch of games that I'll never watch. However, during the four months that we have it we get all premium channels for free, including the DVR service so it is a great deal. After the four months we can chose to stay with the premium channels and get all of them for the cost of only HBO and Stars on Comcast.
The family room in the basement has a satellite receiver, TiVo, and DVD/VCR player so now there is no excuse to be upstairs wanting to watch TV while I work. :-)
I contacted Verizon and will be switching to DSL later this month. I can expense my broadband bill but it doesn't seem responsible to pay $50/month for something when I can get similar service for $20/month the first three months and then $30/month after that.
I've been trying to call Comcast all morning and all I get is a busy signal or a message saying that they're really busy and I'll have to try back again later. DirecTV wanted my business bad enough that I called on Friday afternoon and had an installer at my home Sunday morning. I hope they keep up the excellent service!
Of course, any time new technology is deployed in this house 'someone' gets very anxious and wonders about a whole bunch of what-ifs. The biggest concern now is that either the dish will get covered with ice and tear off our roof or that we'll have a snow storm and won't be able to get any channels.

Dave - I can't wait to be Comcast free.
Posted by: Bob on August 15, 2005 04:46 PMComcast is the antiChrist! For broadband, I've been Comcast free for over two years now, and there's no looking back. My DSL is almost as fast, and has ALOT more uptime than I got with Comcast.
I dumped their TV about 7 years before that, first for DishNetwork (who I truly loved.) I had to dump DishNetwork for DTV because my receiver started going on the fritz and DishNetwork wanted an arm and a leg for a new one. Why do that when I can get a multi-sat dish AND 4 receivers installed all for FREE (my favorite 4 letter "F" word!) Dish folk wouldn't budge, so I'm a satellite slut.
Hopefully you got a DVR, those are nice. You never know when JJ's gonna do another peep show.
Have a large weekend!
