Good wine or Finally opened a bottle.

Beautiful Wife's Younger Sister and Her Cousin stopped by for a visit last night. We tried to go out for a martini but both places that I'd go in Dover were close as of 8pm on a Sunday night. WTF?

We went back home and I opened a bottle of wine. It was the 2002 Goat-Roti which is primarily a Shiraz but has 5% of Viognier thrown in there too. It was a Wine Spectator 'smart buy' that scored a 91 and was only $18 a bottle. The Viognier is a full-bodied white varietal that adds rich and spicy flavors, according to WS. It definitely enhanced the forward, fruit-driven structure of the Shiraz.

There's nothing subtle about this wine in terms of bouquet or taste and it was a lot of fun to drink. We broke out my Le Nez du Vin and tried our noses out in terms of guessing the scents and then seeing if we could detect it in our wine.

The kids came in from outside and wanted a chance at guessing the smells and it was pretty funny to watch them sniff and then try to puzzle it out. At one point Youngest Daughter sniffed something and then said it reminded her of the chocolate store...ummm...like truffles!

After she left the room I pointed out to the grownups that the truffle scent in the bottle is that of the fungus and not the candy in a store. YD must have seen that on the description card and figured that she'd wing it.

Heehee.

I'm a virgin. Hey! Stop laughing. I mean a wine virgin...but I'm an eager pupil and have a wonderful tutor.

Excellent recommendations! I'll be out at the liquor store soon. In CT, they're open until 9 pm now. WHooooee! Do I feel lucky?

I have quite a penchant for all wines red and full bodied. I'm only recenly becoming open to whites and the delicate flavors within. Shiraz and Cab will top the list of super dooper favs and until I saw Sideways, I never gave Pinot a second look. I have a bottle now from Oregon and I'll be opening it shortly. I've been told to give young pinot's at least a half hour to breathe.

First Run is my favorite cheapy double bottle (and it is a real first run!) and they make a great Shiraz. I used to favor the J. Lohr cab but alas it's getting so $$$ as is the Columbia Crest that I used to think was swill but will now gladly devour at 12 a bottle....

You never know, YD may be a budding sommelier.

That's an interesting blend, Viognier and Shiraz...I'll keep my eye out for it.

She does like sniffing the wine when I have a glass, Marisol, and she does have a good sense of what she's smelling.

I've tried to ensure that my kids will grow up and have a working knowledge of wine, even if they don't like to drink it. :)

Columbia Crest has some good wines, LB, including their merlot. There! I admitted it where everyone can see, I enjoy a 'good' merlot!
