Karate means empty hands or It doesn't mean grace.

I was reading a funny story over at Deirdre's blog and she wondered what the equivalent type of story would be if we were talking about karate.

I was a fairly new student and we were working on the nunchucks (nunchaku is the real name, and certainly not numbchucks though that may apply in this case). I didn't like the foam covered plastic ones so I decided to purchase a pair made from wood.

Everything was fine during the pre-defined exercises until we were told to improvise. I started swinging them in one direction, changed my mind, and ended up hitting myself in the forehead.

It reminded me of the sound made when someone thumps a melon to check its ripeness, a hollow sound that kind of echos. Everyone looked at me and then we all started to laugh.

The story gets better each time it gets told to a new group of students in the dojo. Currently, I stagger and end up dizzy for the rest of the class. I'm going to be in a coma if this keeps up!

The post was good, but your comment is better... LOL! You might ratchet up the drama so far that one year you'll have to tell them you killed yourself! Can you imagine the looks? Those students would be doing EVERYTHING you told them to after that, being just a bit worried about your mental state...
Hope it's not TOO echoey in that great empty melon-like space.

I've seen the empty-handed equivalent of this blunder. During a test, one younger student was a bit too nervous and full of adrenaline for his own good. While performing the first block of the eight point blocking system, he somehow managed to hammer-fist himself in the jaw.

The real insult to injury is that the move was so basic and he was not a beginner.

So....Bob...I think maybe I may have witnessed that in class- or heard the gory details. The story does get better. "Bob had closed his eyes and he was wobbling back and forth! i thought he was going to pass out!" By the way, haven't seen you in class!
