A post about wine or To drink or not to drink, that's a stupid question!

I received $75 in gift cards for the NH liquor store system for my birthday. We celebrated it today with my Sainted Mother and she had the gifts from my sisters and aunt at her house too. I also received $50 in gift certificates for L.L. Bean.

I got one bottle of wine, 2000 Ghost Gum Cabernet Sauvignon. It is one of the wines from Australia that are starting to use a screw cap rather than cork for a closure. My Aunt, that gave me this wine, also gave me a Rabbit Corkscrew. I've always wanted one but never thought of buying it for myself. I think it is funny that she gave me a new corkscrew and then a screw cap wine.

Now I have to think about what I want to buy from the Liquor Store system...

Hey, you gave me a bottle of Ghost Gum once, remember? I believe you said bought it because the label was cool. :) It had a cork though.

I just opened a bottle of Penfolds Bin 389 Cab/Shiraz and found the cork had been leaking... so I like the screw caps. Scientifically they are supposed to be better. Sure, they're not as fun to open, but really on most nights I just want the damn bottle open and not have to fiddle with a corkscrew. Glad to see Australia and NZ seem to be leading the way with screw caps.

Most of the Australian wines I've had had a synthetic cork. I'm not sure if that's better or not, but it's certainly not as much fun or as versatile as a regular cork. Then again, it doesn't end up crumbling into the wine like real corks can.

I've heard the move away from real corks is because there's a shortage of real cork, so I suppose synthetic corks and screw caps will become ever more common.

Screw caps-they're not just for winos anymore! :)

Dave - I remember getting you the Ghost Gum and mentioned that to my mother when she gave me the bottle.

I like screw caps but there is something fun about opening a bottle using a corkscrew.
