Forwarding Email or Ok, that was just plain stupid

I'm involved with a major project where I work that has had some bumps in the road. We'd probably sell more if we could just get out of our own way to do it. Anyway, there's an ongoing issue that has resulted in a plethora of emails being exchanged regarding the status of the project.

The customer contact, who can be a real jerk at times, sent an email asking for an update. The lead engineer replied to all and said that the code release is perceived as being the answer to all their problems even though it probably is not. He suggested it be given to the customer anyway and not convince them otherwise. The only problem? The customer was on the distribution for the reply.
